Using Astrology to Enhance Your Creativity
I started writing a new novel project that scares the shit out of me.
It’s one of those projects that doesn’t feel safe to write because it’s a story rooted in traumatic experiences I’ve had. Luckily, I have the opportunity to workshop it later this summer with a group of other young adult writers. But in the meantime, I’ve been working through these feelings through the lens of my astrological practice.
Just as I am in dialogue with myself about creative projects, I am also in dialogue with the planets. Venus is the go-to planet for artistic endeavors because it governs beauty, love, relationships and aesthetics. But what about the projects that do not prioritize harmony or even socially accepted beauty standards? What of the art that speaks to severance, hardship, and internal struggle?

Empress: The Tarot Card for Creatives
Whenever Empress comes up for me in a tarot card reading, it always brings a message of connecting back to source. As an artist, that means connecting my creativity. Empress is the third card in the Major Arcana. She precedes the responsible authority of the Emperor and follows the mysticism of the High Priestess. She is living out the abundance first imagined by the Magician.

Saturn as Liberation
Saturn is considered a malefic planet by traditional astrologers, alongside Mars. It’s associated with limits, frustration, patience, coldness, boundaries, mastery, extremity, and structure. The glyph for Saturn includes a scythe, a representation of its agricultural significations. Saturn governs farmers and gardeners, people who know when and how to reap what they sow. Saturn is a reflection of Kronos, the Greek god of time and harvest. Yes, his mythos includes swallowing his children to avoid being overthrown (delays are very Saturnian) but he also brought peaceful abundance to the first generation of humans.
